Antique 1892 Catholic Family Bible: Douay-Rheims, Haydock Illustrated, Sculpted Leather, Metal Clasps
$1,111.00
A Stunning Piece of Victorian History
Presenting an absolutely breathtaking 1890s Douay-Rheims Catholic Family Bible, featuring notes and references by Reverend George Leo Haydock. With its deeply embossed “sculpted” leather cover, intricate gold gilt tooling, and intact original metal clasps, this massive antiquarian book is a magnificent display piece.
The presentation page is beautifully illustrated and dated April 28, 1892. While the interior shows the heavy love and wear typical of a family heirloom from this era, the exterior binding remains a spectacular example of 19th-century bookmaking. It is perfect for a dark academia library, a religious centerpiece, or as a prop for historical staging.
Key Features:
Translation: Douay-Rheims
Notes: Rev. Geo. Leo Haydock’s Notes and References (Illustrated)
Cover: Deep relief/paneled dark leather with heavy gold gilt detailing.
Hardware: Two fully functioning ornate metal clasps.
Illustrations: Includes beautiful full-page steel engravings and chromolithograph presentation pages.
Honest Condition Report (Please Read Carefully):
This Bible is being sold strictly “As-Is” as a display piece or restoration project.
Exterior: The leather cover is in remarkably good condition for its age, with strong, bright gilt and functioning clasps. There is some typical rubbing on the corners and edges.
Interior: The interior is in Fair/Poor condition. There is significant separation at the binding/spine. Pages exhibit age-appropriate foxing (brown spotting) and toning. The decorative “Family Portraits” section has severe tears, loose pages, and detachment.
Please review all photos closely, as they represent the exact item you will receive and detail the beautiful exterior as well as the interior damage.
